Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational - Live Scoring

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Less than a week after finishing second at the Rose City Collegiate, the Oregon State women's golf team returns to the links to compete at the 31st Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational against a tough 16-team field Monday through Wednesday in Sammamish, Wash.

COURSE: Sahalee Country Club (Par 72, 6,054 yards). The course has played host to several prestigious tournaments through the years, including the 2010 U.S. Senior Open, 2002 NEC World Championship and 1998 PGA Championship.

TEE TIMES: The three-day, 54-hole tournament will feature 18 holes per day with tee times starting at 9 a.m. on Monday, 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday and 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

FORMAT: The top-four individuals from each team with the lowest scores for each 18-hole round constitute the scoring members of the five-member team for that given round.

FIELD: Oregon State, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Hawai'i, Long Beach State, Oregon, Portland State, San Diego State, San Francisco, San Jose State, Seattle U., Stanford, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UNLV and Washington.

LIVE SCORING: Live scoring will be available on golfstat.com.

OREGON STATE LINEUP: It will be the same lineup for the third straight tournament this season with senior Rachael Fischer, juniors Lauren Sewell and Seshia Telles, sophomore Anica Yoo and freshman Chelsea Saelee.

LAST TIME OUT: Oregon State finished in second place at the 13-team Rose City Collegiate in Aurora, Ore., and Sewell had a career-best placing in a three-round tournament with a tie for sixth place last Monday and Tuesday.

The Beavers were in second place after 36 holes of play, trailing Seattle U. by 13 strokes, and rallied to finish a stroke ahead of the Redhawks, but Cal State Fullerton posted a solid final round in cool and breezy conditions to win the team title at the par-72, 6,080-yard Langdon Farms Golf Club.

Sewell shot a 6-over 78 on Tuesday after throwing scores of 75 and 72 on her Monday scorecard to finish the tournament with a 9-over 225 and tied for sixth place overall. It's her first career top-10 finish in a three-round tournament, and third overall, after finishing in a tie for seventh at last season's two-round Peg Barnard Invitational and fourth at the Washington National Individual Championship.

Telles also shot a 6-over 78 on Tuesday and just missed a top-10 finish with a tie for 12th with a 13-over 81-70-78--229. Yoo shot the Beavers' best round on Tuesday to finish a stroke back of Telles with a 14-over 78-77-75--230, while Saelee was tied for 22nd with a 17-over 77-77-79--233 and Fischer wrapped up play with a 20-over 81-77-78--236 for a tie for 29th.

LAST TIME AT EDEAN IHLANFELDT INVITATIONAL: The last time Oregon State competed at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational was last fall when the Beavers posted their second consecutive top-five finish to start its 2011 fall season after finishing in fifth place in the 12-team field.

All five Oregon State golfers shot in the 70's in the final round at the par-72, 6,063-yard Sahalee Country Club with Telles and Sewell firing a 77 and Whitney French, Yoo and Bethany Wurster all posting a 78. Telles and Yoo both finished tied for 12th individually with a 12-over 228, while Sewell finished tied for 21st with a 13-over 229 and French was tied for 37th with a 21-over 237.

Pac-12 teams held down the top five spots with Colorado winning the team title, followed by Oregon in second, Washington and California in a tie for third and the Beavers in fifth place. Madeleine Sheils of Nebraska won medalist honors with a 2-under 73-74-67--214.

QUOTING HEAD COACH Ris? Alexander: "We worked on our wedge game and putting in practice the last few days. With a short turnaround time we wanted to concentrate on the short game. The team worked on their own at the driving range as well. Four out of five of our players have played the course so that is an advantage on this course. Sahalee is a tight, demanding golf course so experience on this course should pay off. We are looking for a top-five finish again this week. I expect good finishes from all of the players. Lauren, Anica and Seshia definitely will have an impact on our successful finish."

Plastic Drawers Made Pretty | My Blessed Home

See this?

I have eight of these little drawer units, holding a total of 24 drawers. I?ve been using them for ten or fifteen years, and have come to depend on them to sort paper of all kinds. In addition to the action, bill paying and filing drawers that you see in the picture, I also have drawers for shopping (coupons, etc), puzzles, lined paper, unlined paper, special paper, notecards, photos, and one for each child to put their school and miscellaneous papers? and more.

Wonderful and useful little drawers, aren?t they? But they have one flaw. The see-through feature makes them rather ugly, when you can see the myriad of papers inside. Yesterday, with the help of my two eldest daughters, I decided to do something about that.

I found this youtube tutorial, which showed me an inexpensive way to decorate them and hide the contents:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-is3_ppuwQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player. Then we got down to business.

  1. I got out a package of color-coordinated scrapbook paper (bought recently for another project), Mod Podge (I always have it on hand), and paintbrushes.
  2. The kids and I selected our favorite patterns from the scrapbook paper pad, and cut them to fit the front of each drawer.
  3. We brushed a thin layer of Mod Podge to the front interior of the first drawer.
  4. We carefully laid a piece of scrapbook paper over the Mod Podge.
  5. We mod podged the back side of the scrapbook paper.
  6. We repeated this process 23 times.
  7. We let the drawers air dry for several hours.

After the drawers were dry, I got out my beloved label maker?(I use it for everything) and made a label for each drawer.

This is what it looked like when all was said and done:

All lined up together on our homeschool bookshelves (puzzle drawers are not in the picture):

Now that?s more like it! Pretty AND functional!

Video: Will Obama be better prepared for a rematch?

>>> every time in this campaign that mitt romney had his back up against the wall and had adebate, he came out and had a game-changing debate. on sunday i came out sxsd what i believed, which was i have seen this guy do it before, and i think he'll do it again. he did last night.

>> chris christie gives himself a pat on the back on " morning joe " after predicts on "meet the press" that the debate would be a game changer for governor romney. joining me is patrick gaspar, the executive director of the democratic national committee . thank you for your time. what is your impression of the debate? how would you score president obama since the heat is on him today?

>> there's a basic threshold that you meet when you run for president or you're a president. people expect you to be honest and candid with them. the president was more than honest. he was transparent about his plans and gave context for where we came from and how we dug out a deep hole and pointed the way forward with his vision. conversely, mitt romney put on quite a show last night, and he was as entertaining as one of the greatest --

>> was the president prepared for that show as you referred to it?

>> look, we have a clear sense of mitt romney . we know the guy on the stage last night was the same man that tried to run to the left of ted kennedy once and to the right of rick perry . he lies with conviction.

>> let me play what governor sunun said an hour ago with andrea mitchell .

>> did you mean to call barack obama the president of the united states lazy?

>> yes. i think you saw him admit it the night before when he delivered the pizzas. he said, you know, they're making me do this work. he didn't want to prepare for this debate. he didn't want to prepare for this debate. he's lazy and disengaged.

>> do you want to respond to that?

>> how do you respond to that. john sun nu has a pension for provocation. they can defend that insult, but last night the president again had a very clear adult conversation with the american people about the circumstances we're in today. mitt romney , like the true used car salesman he is, was all over the lot and spinning tales all over the place. people aren't going to buy that lemon.

>> supporters of the president, some are not happy today. they feel for example aalone on the $716 billion that romney accused the president of taking out of medicare , the president did not refute that. let me play this moment. it has a lot of people concerned.

>> on medicare , for current retirees, he's cutting $716 billion from the program. now, he says by not overpaying hospitals and providers. actually, just going to them and saying, we're going to reduce the rate you're paid across the board. everybody gets a lower rate. that's not just going after places where there's abuse. they says we'll cut the rates. i can't new england how you cut medicare $716 billion for current recipients of medicare .

>> the president could have explained that that money coming from trimming future increases over the next decade. he could have explained that this is the example same amount in the ryan budget. why not go head-on that example alone? why not go head-on?

>> that was one snippet, tamron, clearly. there were many instances where the president pushed back hard on medicare , on social security and on the tax cuts and on education as well. there are many, many instances where he pushed back hard. there were so many lies being rained upon the president last night he didn't know which direction to turn the umbrella.

>> you think he was overwhelmed by the inaccuracies?

>> that's not what i'm saying. he lied with conviction and servitude about education and about medicare . he was all over the place, and at some point the truth will out on all the issues over the next few days and weeks.

>> we're almost out of time. the 47% remark, why not bring that to the table as a weapon in this debate?

>> tamron, it's on the table. it certainly has sat ratded, and the president raised it last night, i'm sure mitt romney would have declared it wasn't him in the video, that it was clint eastwood or somebody else. he lied about everything else.

>> you are banking over the next days that the president --

>> the president told the truth and had a krconversation with the american public.

>> they point out how the president may have lost the debate, he can still win the next 24 hours . how will the jobs report, for example, factor into the big picture ? plus, if your candidate doesn't win, jetblue may have an offer you can't refuse. it's one of the things

Sony recalls Xperia Tablet S after water resistance concerns

Android Central

Remember the Sony Xperia Tablet S? Yea, that one with the interesting wedge shape -- no, not the one with the big wedge shape -- that's the one. A main selling point for the tablet was its water resistance. Unfortunately Sony is being forced to recall tablets in several markets around the world -- starting with Japan -- because the devices aren't living up to their claims. Apparently, a manufacturing defect was leaving gaps between the display and housing of the device, which in turn lets water get where it shouldn't.

So if you've got a Tablet S (and since they've only shipped about 100,000 you'd be one of a select few), be sure to be extra careful when you're having that cup of coffee next to your tablet in the morning, and get ready to possibly send your device back to be replaced or repaired.

FACT CHECK: Presidential debate missteps

John Rossitto watches the first presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney from a restaurant in San Diego, Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012. (AP Photo/Gregory Bull)

(AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney spun one-sided stories in their first presidential debate, not necessarily bogus, but not the whole truth.

Here's a look at some of their claims and how they stack up with the facts:

OBAMA: "I've proposed a specific $4 trillion deficit reduction plan. ... The way we do it is $2.50 for every cut, we ask for $1 in additional revenue."

THE FACTS: In promising $4 trillion, Obama is already banking more than $2 billion from legislation enacted along with Republicans last year that cut agency operating budgets and capped them for 10 years. He also claims more than $800 billion in war savings that would occur anyway. And he uses creative bookkeeping to hide spending on Medicare reimbursements to doctors. Take those "cuts" away and Obama's $2.50/$1 ratio of spending cuts to tax increases shifts significantly more in the direction of tax increases.

Obama's February budget offered proposals that would cut deficits over the coming decade by $2 trillion instead of $4 trillion. Of that deficit reduction, tax increases accounted for $1.6 trillion. He promises relatively small spending cuts of $597 billion from big federal benefit programs like Medicare and Medicaid. He also proposed higher spending on infrastructure projects.

___

ROMNEY on cutting the deficit: "Obamacare's on my list. ... I'm going to stop the subsidy to PBS. ... I'll make government more efficient."

THE FACTS: Romney has promised to balance the budget in eight years to 10 years, but he hasn't offered a complete plan. Instead, he's promised a set of principles, some of which ? like increasing Pentagon spending and restoring more than $700 billion in cuts that Democrats made in Medicare over the coming decade ? work against his goal. He also has said he will not consider tax increases.

He pledges to shrink the government to 20 percent of the size of the economy, as opposed to more than 23 percent of gross domestic product now, by the end of his first term. The Romney campaign estimates that would require cuts of $500 billion from the 2016 budget alone. He also has pledged to cut tax rates by 20 percent, paying for them by eliminating tax breaks for the wealthiest and through economic growth.

To fulfill his promise, then, Romney would require cuts to other programs so deep ? under one calculation requiring cutting many areas of the domestic budget by one-third within four years ? that they could never get through Congress. Cuts to domestic agencies would have to be particularly deep.

But he's offered only a few modest examples of government programs he'd be willing to squeeze, like subsidies to PBS and Amtrak. He does want to repeal Obama's big health care law, but that law is actually forecast to reduce the deficit.

___

OBAMA: "Gov. Romney's central economic plan calls for a $5 trillion tax cut ? on top of the extension of the Bush tax cuts, that's another trillion dollars ? and $2 trillion in additional military spending that the military hasn't asked for. That's $8 trillion. How we pay for that, reduce the deficit, and make the investments that we need to make, without dumping those costs onto middle-class Americans, I think is one of the central questions of this campaign."

THE FACTS: Obama's claim that Romney wants to cut taxes by $5 trillion doesn't add up. Presumably, Obama was talking about the effect of Romney's tax plan over 10 years, which is common in Washington. But Obama's math doesn't take into account Romney's entire plan.

Romney proposes to reduce income tax rates by 20 percent and eliminate the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax. The Tax Policy Center, a Washington research group, says that would reduce federal tax revenues by $465 billion in 2015, which would add up to about $5 trillion over 10 years.

However, Romney says he wants to pay for the tax cuts by reducing or eliminating tax credits, deductions and exemptions. The goal is a simpler tax code that raises the same amount of money as the current system but does it in a more efficient manner.

The knock on Romney's plan, which Obama accurately cited, is that Romney has refused to say which tax breaks he would eliminate to pay for the lower rates.

___

ROMNEY: Obama's health care plan "puts in place an unelected board that's going to tell people ultimately what kind of treatments they can have. I don't like that idea."

THE FACTS: Romney is referring to the Independent Payment Advisory Board, a panel of experts that would have the power to force Medicare cuts if costs rise beyond certain levels and Congress fails to act. But Obama's health care law explicitly explicitly prohibits the board from rationing care, shifting costs to retirees, restricting benefits or raising the Medicare eligibility age. So the board doesn't have the power to dictate to doctors what treatments they can prescribe.

Romney seems to be resurrecting the assertion that Obama's law would lead to rationing, made famous by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's widely debunked allegation that it would create "death panels."

The board has yet to be named, and its members would ultimately have to be confirmed by the Senate. Health care inflation has been modest in the last few years, so cuts would be unlikely for most of the rest of this decade.

___

OBAMA: It's important "that we take some of the money that we're saving as we wind down two wars to rebuild America."

THE FACTS: This oft-repeated claim is based on a fiscal fiction. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were paid for mostly with borrowed money, so stopping them doesn't create a new pool of available cash that can be used for something else, like rebuilding America. It just slows down the government's borrowing.

___

ROMNEY: "At the same time, gasoline prices have doubled under the president. Electric rates are up."

THE FACTS: He's right that the average price has doubled, and a little more, since Obama was sworn in. But presidents have almost no influence on gasoline prices, and certainly not in the near term. Gasoline prices are set on financial exchanges around the world and are based on a host of factors, most importantly the price of crude oil used to make gasoline, the amount of finished gasoline ready to be shipped and the capacity of refiners to make enough to meet market demand.

Retail electricity prices have risen since Obama took office ? barely. They've grown by an average of less than 1 percent per year, less than the rate of inflation and slower than the historical growth in electricity prices. The unexpectedly modest rise in electricity prices is because of the plummeting cost of natural gas, which is used to generate electricity.

___

OBAMA: "Independent studies looking at this said the only way to meet Gov. Romney's pledge of not ... adding to the deficit is by burdening middle-class families. The average middle-class family with children would pay about $2,000 more."

THE FACTS: That's just one scenario. Obama's claim relies on a study by the Tax Policy Center, a Washington research group. The study, however, is more nuanced than Obama indicated.

The study concludes it would be impossible for Romney to meet all of his stated goals without shifting some of the tax burden from people who make more than $200,000 to people who make less.

In one scenario, the study says, Romney's proposal could result in a $2,000 tax increase for families who make less than $200,000 and have children.

Romney says his plan wouldn't raise taxes on anyone, and his campaign points to several studies by conservative think tanks that dispute the Tax Policy Center's findings. Most of the conservative studies argue that Romney's tax plan would stimulate economic growth, generating additional tax revenue without shifting any of the tax burden to the middle class. Congress, however, doesn't use those kinds of projections when it estimates the effect of tax legislation.

Futurity.org ? 'Irreversible' drug toxic to ovarian cancer

Because the new drug is "irreversible," it latches on to its target and doesn't wear down. The researchers say this means patients with ovarian cancer could potentially take lower doses. (Credit: "scientist hand" via Shutterstock)

USC (US) ? A new type of drug for ovarian cancer latches on and doesn?t let go?which means patients could take fewer doses, and that it may be effective for drug-resistant cancers.

The drug is a member of a new class of cytotoxic agents abbreviated as PACMA that was discovered by testing roughly 10,000 chemical compounds on cancer cells in the lab of Nouri Neamati, professor of pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Pharmacy.

?We need a new generation of drugs. We need to overcome the drug-resistance issue,? says graduate student Shili Xu, the lead author of the paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In order to investigate and optimize the anticancer properties of PACMAs, researchers synthesized over 80 newly designed compounds?one called PACMA31 was eventually found to be extremely toxic to ovarian cancer cells and a potentially highly effective drug.

PACMA31 is a potent and selective inhibitor of a protein called Protein Disulfide Isomerase (PDI) that is highly expressed in ovarian cancer, can be taken orally, and accumulates in cancer cells, which means that it is less likely to cause harmful side effects in normal tissues.

It also is what is known as an ?irreversible? drug, meaning that it latches on to its target, PDI, permanently and refuses to wear off until the protein is degraded.

That irreversibility may result in prolonged duration of drug action that could translate into giving the patients lower doses of drugs. ?We are exploring combination studies in order to find synergy between our drug and first-line therapy for ovarian cancer,? says Neamati.

Currently, there are two major types of drugs in the first-line treatment of ovarian cancer: paclitaxel, which hinders cancer cell division by inhibiting the disassembly of microtubules; and carboplatin, which binds to and causes crosslinking of DNA that results in cancer cell death.

PACMA31 attacks cancer cells in yet a different way, targeting PDI and thus interrupting the folding process during which proteins assume the shapes that allow them to function properly. Accumulation of misfolded proteins in a cell causes cellular stress and eventually cancer cell death.

Because PACMA31?s strategy is different than that of current anticancer drugs, it has the potential to help patients who do not respond to paclitaxel or cisplatin.? ?When the patient has no other choice, we could potentially treat them with our drug,? Neamati says.

The drug has only been tested in the lab on ovarian cancer cells and on mice with tumors and will require additional testing, but so far appears to be nontoxic and effective at halting tumor growth. It may also have potential for treating other types of cancer, Neamati says.?Obviously, we think that it will go beyond ovarian cancer.?

Funding for the research came from the USC Zumberge Research and Innovation Fund, the American Chemical Society, the William Cockrell Endowed Cancer Research Fund, and the Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Program.
