According to Sky News, rescuers have called off the search for survivors in the Bushehr, Iran, earthquake. The quake killed 37 people.
Though rescuers have found 20 people, the Tuesday quake relief effort will now be focused on helping hundreds of homeless and injured residents of the port city.
Meanwhile, the former negotiator for the country is now a presidential candidate, as reported by the Associated Press. Hasan Rohani, a centrist, said he would work to improve relations with the West.
Here's a closer look at headlines in Iran.
* The report from Sky News indicated that 850 people were injured and 700 homes were destroyed in the 6.1 magnitude quake.
* There were two conflicting accounts of the strength of the earthquake according to Sky News. The Iranian Seismological Center said the strongest aftershock was of a 5.3 magnitude, while the U.S. Geological Survey put the size at a 6.3 magnitude.
* A report from Aljazeera indicated that relief efforts were being stepped up to assist those in need.
* The earthquake took place near a Russian-built nuclear reactor which Iran told the International Atomic Energy Agency had taken no damage. The Russian company that build the reactor agreed.
* Atomstoyexport, the company that build the station, said that "the earthquake in no way affected the normal situation at the reactor. Personnel continue to work in the normal regime and radiation levels are fully within the norm," according to Aljazeera.
* The White House has offered to aid in Iran's recovery, according to a report from Reuters. A spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, Caitlin Hayden, offered condolences. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and the destruction that's been caused by this disaster, and stand ready to help the Iranian people in this time of need," she said in the statement.
* According to the AP, Rohani told a campaign rally that he would "be restoring the economy, promoting morality and relations with the world. I will build government of prudence and hope."
* The former negotiator is currently considered a leading candidate for the June elections.
* Rohani will not be facing current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is term-limited and can not run again.
* The Iranian president has limited political power, in particular in international policy decision-making, which is left to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
